Abstract

The main purpose of this article consists in putting certain restriction in the generalization of B. Laca (1996) of which Spanish bare NPs are not referential nor quantified expressions. She justifies her idea with semantic characterization of Spanish bare NPs as anumeric, no determined, generic and no inclusive based on her own examples. But we consider her idea an exaggerated generalization because the phenomena occur only when the NPs in question are focalized. In order to prove our point of view, firstly we showed that the examples for 4 main meanings of Spanish bare NPs introduced by Laca are on the contrary ones that support the quantified status of bare NPs and secondly we examined two different types of the focalization of Spanish sentences; focalization of all elements and partial focalization.
