- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that using a representative corpus of natural language can provide better answers to questions about specific language usage than any published dictionary-for example, bilingual dictionaries, native-speaker dictionaries, and learners dictionaries. With an example of the phrase naked eye, the paper compares the information contained in the dictionary entry with that of a corpus, called the British National Corpus (100 million words). Access to the corpus facilitates the statistical evaluation of disputed usage and reveals information about the frequency, concordance and collocation of the linguistic items being searched, and exposure to corpus data makes our linguistic knowledge about those items much richer and deeper. The paper will also show that the actual process of consulting a corpus is in itself a language learning lesson of enormous value.
