This paper examines the transparent and opaque surface realizations observed in derived environments. and investigates the interaction between phonological well - formedness and paradigm strength. Contrast between hiatus resolution and hiatus maintenance in Korean verbal conjugations is shown to result from various paradigmatic principles: paradigm stability. paradigm economy and paradigm regularization. Such a functional approach can eliminate the stipulative mechanism of rule reordering or constraint reranking. and thus achieve a greater degree of explanatory adequacy than ever before.ko_KR
