Abstract
This paper describes the phonetic realizations of semivowel ɥ that exists in modern Korean dialects, analyses the semivowel ɥ phonemically and explores the phonological process that is the formation of semivowel from /ü/ and /ö/. Semivowels are also called as approximants or glides. But ìn this paper the term of semivowel is used, because it is appropriate for the syllable structure of Korean. For the Semivowel ɥ, the point of articulation is phonetically palatal and the lip attitude is round. q is found when the /w/ is in the front of /i/ like 위 [wi -ɥi] and when the /y/ is in the front of /0, u/ like 우유 [uyu-uɥu]. Futhermore it is found in the boundary of morpheme like 뛰+어 twi+a [tɥa:]. Semivowel ɥ can also used in the formation of Korean diphthong. The rising diphthongs that exit phonetically in Korean are [ɥi, ɥu, ɥo, ɥe, ɥɜ, ɥe, ɥa]. Semivowel ɥ is phonemically analyzed into /w/, /y/ or /ɥ/ according to the its environments. Semivowel ɥ that ìs in the front of /i/, and that is in the back of the phonemically palatal consonants is phonemically analyzed into /w/ : 위[ɥi] ; 줘[tʃɥə], 좌[tʃɥa], 좨[tʃɥɜ], 줴[tʃɥe]. Semivowel ɥ that is in the front of /u, o/ is analyzed into /y / : 우유[uɥu], 용[ɥOŋ]. Semivowel ɥ that is in the other environments is analyzed into /ɥ/ : 뚜ㅕ:[tɥə:], 도ㅑ:[tɥa:], 수ㅖ:[ʃɥe]. So the semivowel system of Korean consists of /w, y, ɥ/. The distinctive feature of /ɥ/ is [+consonantal, -syllabic, -back, +round]. The phonological process that has the relation with semivowel ɥ is the semivowel formation. The name of this process is ɥ-formation. ɥ-formation is parallel with w-formation and y-formation in the respects of realizations and constraints. When the verbs and adjectives that end with /ü/ or /ö/ meet the endings that start with vowels, ɥ'-formation can be applied optionally. This process can be represented with the following rule : [ü, ö] → ɥ / _ɭVstem + V (optional). This is the phonological rule that is synchronical
