Gay and lesbian adolescents are a socially oppressed group discriminated against by a heterosexist and homophobic society. Because of the negative stigma society places on lesbian and gay adolescents, they face numerous difficulties that require social support and counseling intervention. Adolescents struggling with gender and sexual orientation continues to increase, but they may often be unknown to counselors, teachers, and other school personnel. Gay and lesbian adolescents with invisible challenges constitute a special area of concern for counselors and teachers. These adolescents are discriminated against by universal social institutions such as the family, social culture, and educational setting and face unique challenges in developing their healthy identity and gaining social acceptance. However, counselors and teachers who find themselves working with gay and lesbian adolescents have a limited knowledge base by which to guide them in the helping process. This study examines and synthesizes current literature in an attempt to explore the unique issues that gay and lesbian adolescents must deal with in a homophobic society, the challenges faced by these adolescents, and the consequences of disregarding this population. And then, the study proposes counseling intervention for improving their educational experiences in terms of one-to-one counseling, group counseling, family counseling, and school counseling. Suggestions are made for improving counseling intervention with gay and lesbian adolescents, including increasing personal awareness of one's own homophobia and heterosexist bias in working with them; educating oneself and them about homosexuality; establishing positive social support programs to serve lesbian and gay adolescents; advocating for sanctions to end gay and lesbian adolescents harassment in the educational system; and advocating for the inclusion of sexual information in school sex education curricula.
