사교육비 지출의 성별 차이 분석

Abstract

이 논문은 사교육비 지출이 학생의 성(性)에 따라 다른지 확인하였다. 아울러 실증적으로 확인되는 성별 차이에 대하여 어떤 요인이 작용하는지 설명을 시도하였다. 단편적으로 논급되어 온 사교육상의 성차(性差) 문제를 체계적으로 다룸으로써, 사교육 연구 지평을 넓히고자 하였다. 한국청소년패널조사 데이터를 이용하였으며, 중학교 2학년부터 고등학교 3학년까지 종단적 데이터를 학년별로 구분하여 분석 비교하였다.

분석 결과로 중학교와 고등학교 단계에서 방향이 다른 성차를 발견하였다. 중학교 단계에서는 남학생이 사교육비를 더 지출하는 경향이 있는 반면, 고등학교 단계에서는 여학생이 더 지출하는 경향이 있었다. 성별로 사교육비 지출이 다른 데 대해서도, 중학교와 고등학교 단계에서 서로 다른 요인이 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 중학교 단계에서는 남녀 학생의 가정이 자녀구성에서 차이를 보이는 점이 성차에 관련된 것으로 나타났고, 고등학교 단계에서는 남녀 학생이 진로를 다르게 추구하는 점이 성차에 관련된 것으로 나타났다. 이런 관련에는 우리사회의 전통적이며 가부장적인 인습이 작용한다고 추론하였다.

The study empirically examined the gender difference in spending for private tutoring. An investigation was also made to identify the factors and mechanism that might generate the gender difference found. Utilizing the KYPS data set, the study did regression analysis for five longitudinal stages from 8th to 12th grades and compared the results from each grades.

The gender difference varied with school levels. At the middle school level the spending was bigger for boys but at the high school level it favored girls. The difference at the middle school level seemed related to the fact that boys tended to belong to a family of fewer siblings. At the high school level the cause of the gender difference was traced to the differences in high school tracks and expected college majors. It was also conjectured that the whole mechanism of the gender difference might be in the shadow of the traditional and patriarchical ways of living in Korea.
