- Abstract
- In the age of fast increasing competition, policy-makers as well as scholars are looking for new concepts by identifying an indigenous potential for local development. As a result a knowledge centre strategy comes to the fore as a new alternative for local development strategy. Under this strategy, particular significance has to be attributed the role of universities and research centers on the local level. Especially the university may be the only innovation center for local development in peripheral region.
This study examines the relationship between a university and local community in the periphery region and evaluates the role of university for local development. For case study, Andong university, which is located in nothern region of Kyoungsangpookdo province, one of periphery region in Korea, is selected. The region preserves much cultural tradition and hitsorical inheritance. But the region has been undergoing the rapid depopulation and is one of thinly populated areas in Korea.
