dc.description.abstract | This paper aims to introduce and analyze the concept of strategic usage and its subclasses by distinguishing normative from strategic usage of Korean honorifics. Normative usage is defined as the speaker expresses and accepts persona1 relations - such as power or distance relations with the hearer - by the use of honorifics. Most Korean speakers know how to effectively use honorifics appropriate for various situations, based on age, gender, generation, personal intimacy, and so on. This common intuition among the speakers passes for a quasi- constrained norm of the speech community. So it is more basic and usual usage of Korean honorifics. However, in a sense, strategic usage is defined as a means by which the speaker uses language manipulatively to achieve a special purpose through the change of honorific usage. Therefore, strategic usage, unlike normative usage, involves particular purposes, and stronger intentions on the part of the speaker. Also the change in honorific usage is essential to this strategy. | ko_KR |
