This paper is intended to be an investigation of the historical change of t-irregular
verbs in Korean. In Korean, some verbs which have stem final -t change t to l before a vowel. Verbs of this kind are called t-irregular verbs in Korean grammar. It has been recognized by Korean linguists that there were about 20 t-irregular verb stems in Middle Korean. Some verbs became obsolete and others underwent morphological change. As far as Seoul Korean is concerned, changes took two directions. Some t-irregular verb stems had changed to -l final verb stems by the Middle Korean period and others to –lɨ final verb stems by the beginning of the Contemporary Korean period; for example, kit/kil- (draw), tatʌt/tatʌl- (arrive) changed to kil-, tatʌli-. In Contemporary Korean, there are just a few t-irregular verb stems.
