Abstract

기독교의 정경 구약 성서를 통해 잘 알려진 고대 이스라엘 종교는 한 하나님만 섬기는 유일신교 신앙과 신상숭배 금지 전통을 중심 교리로 삼고 있다는 점에서 주위 가나안이나 메소포타미아 문화권에서 발생한 종교들과 뚜렷하게 구별된다. 비옥한 초승달 지대 동쪽에서는 수메르 문명에서 바빌로니아와 앗수르 문명으로 이어지는 수천 년에 걸친 역사를 통해 만신전에 속한 신들의 수가 시간이 갈수록 확장되는 현상을 보여 주며, 평야 정착민이나 산지 거주민, 혹은 유목민들의 문화에서 발달한 다양한 색채의 신들을 포함하고 있다. 현대 시리아와 이스라엘 지역, 즉 지중해 동쪽 해안에 있는 나라와 민족들도 일월성신이나 날씨와 관련된 다신교 전통을 유지하고 있었고, 이런 종교전통은 구약성서에서도 자주 그 모습을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이런 문화적 분위기에도 불구하고 고대 이스라엘에 유일신교가 발생하고 정통교리로 자리 잡았다는 사실은 매우 놀라운 일이다.

Ancient Israelite religion is commonly known to be monotheistic, which is the origin of the three monotheistic religions of the world. Ten Commandments illustratively ban to create any image for religious service. This view is formed, however, largely on the basis of some descriptions from the Hebrew Bible. Closer reading of the text and the analysis of archaeological finds offer different situation that some Israelite individuals or groups had no problem to serve the Israelite God together with other gods or images. Wall paintings of the synagogue at Dura Europos are another examples for the state of affairs. Jews of the international center of commerce showed their faith was little related to the radical ban of the Hebrew Bible, but freely employed the paintings to adapt to the new cultural setting of their world and to encourage the members of the synagogue to keep their Jewish identity. Religious paintings with the hand of God were not sacred objects for them but expressions of Gods salvation and their hope for the future.
