행위의 도덕적 가치에 대한 칸트의 입장 : 통합테제incorporation thesis에 의한 방어

Abstract

경향성에서가 아니라 의무로부터 비롯된 행동만이 도덕적으로 가치있는 행동이라는 칸트의 테제(GMS IV: 397-9; KpV V: 80-1)는 도덕적으로 가치있는 행동을 하려면 냉혈한의 자세로 해야한다는 반-직관적인 함축을 가지는 것으로 해석되었다. 본 논문은 칸트에서 이성적 행위자의 동기화모델을 규명함으로써 행위의 도덕적 가치에 대한 칸트의 견해를 방어하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 필자는 허먼(B. Herman)의 효과적 동기effective motive론을 앨리슨(H.E.Allison)의 통합테제incorporation thesis로 보완함으로써, 천성적으로 동정심이 많은 행위자가 자신의 동정심을 버리지 않고도 도덕적으로 가치있는 행동을 할 수 있음을 보인다. 본 논문에서는 첫째로 행위의 도덕적 가치에 대한 칸트의 테제가 제시된 정초의 텍스트를 검토하여 경향성으로부터 일어난 행위와 의무로부터 일어난 행위의 구조를 밝히겠다. 그리고 칸트의 행위모델을 이해하기 위한 기본 개념들인 의지와 준칙이 무엇인지 밝히고 준칙과 행위의 동기가 맺는 관계에 대해 살펴보겠다. 이어 통합테제가 제시된 순전한 이성의 한계 안에서의 종교의 한 구절을 검토하면서 통합테제가 무엇인지 해명하겠다. 마지막으로 통합테제의 모델에서 선천적으로 동정심이 많은 행위자가 동정심을 버리지 않고도 의무로부터 다른 사람을 돕는 것이 어떻게 가능한지 보이겠다. Kants position that only actions done not from the motive of inclination but from the motive of duty alone has moral worth (GMS IV: 397-9; KpV V: 80-1) has been interpreted by scholars to yield a counter-intuitive implication that, in order to perform a morally worthy action, one must act as a cold-hearted person. I propose to defend Kants view on the moral worth of actions by clarifying his model of motivation in rational agents. Supplementing the "theory of effective motive" of B.Herman with the incorporation thesis of H. E. Allison, I try to show that a naturally compassionate agent can be said to perform a morally worthy action without abandoning his compassion. In this paper, I reveal the structures of action done from inclination and those of action done from a sense of duty through the examination of the text in Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals where Kants view of the moral worth of actions is presented. Next, I clarify the basic notions — the will and the maxim — which are necessary to understand the model of rational action in Kant, and examine the maxims relationship to the motive of action. Then I explain what the incorporation thesis is by examining a passage in Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason where that thesis is presented. Finally, I try to show how a naturally compassionate agent, using the model from the incorporation thesis, can help other people from a sense of duty without abandoning his compassion.
