심대윤의 중용(中庸) 개념 연구

Abstract

이 글은 심대윤(1806∼1872)의 중용 개념의 이중적 의미를 밝히고 그 핵심이 예(禮)와 수양론에 있음을 주장한다. 심대윤이 비판한 주희의 중용개념은 미발의 본성이 이발의 현상 속에서 실현됨을 설명하는 심성론의 개념에 가깝다. 반면 심대윤의 중용 개념은 일차적으로는 예, 곧 성인이 사회전체의 화합을 지향하며 사심 없는 태도로써 현상의 사태와 사물에 응대하면서 그 속에 존재하는 중(中)을 포착하여 제정한 일상의 항구적인[平常, 庸] 사회규범을 의미하고, 이차적으로는 수양을 하는 자가 성인이 제정한 예를 중(中)으로 받아들임으로써 나의 욕구를 절제하고 타인과 조율해나가는 실천적 수양론으로 연결된다. 심대윤은 욕구와 도덕의 추구를 별개로 구분하여 대중의 도덕 실천경로를 제시하지 못하는 기존 유학자들의 입장을 비판하고, 욕구[欲]를 이익[利]과 명예[名]라는 두 가지 범주로 구분한 뒤 각각을 공평[公]으로서의 충서(忠恕)와 겸손[謙]으로서의 중용(中庸)으로 제어하여 덕(德)을 이룸으로써 사회전체의 조화와 안정을 꾀할 수 있다고 본다.

The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the dual significance of Shim Dae-yoons(沈大允, 1806~1872) concept of the Mean(中庸): the moral standard of society(禮) and the theory of self-cultivation. Zhuxis(朱熹, 1130~1200) concept of the Mean is more of a theory of the Mind and Nature, shedding light on a larger frame how the Sages can expand his weifa[未發] nature onto the phenomena of the yifa[已發]. On the other hand, Shims concept has two-fold significance: 1) the 禮 that the Sages have established as a permanent social code founded on zhōng[中] they have discovered while responding to the phenomena with an unbiased mind. 2) the theory of self-cultivation for which a man who seeks to cultivate himself strives while curbing his desire and creating a balance with others, accepting the 禮 established by the Sages as 中 in his mind while meditating the aim of 禮: the harmony of the entire society. On the whole, Shim, after diagnosing the cause of social chaos as individual desire[欲] for gain[利] and fame[名], prescribes a theory of self-cultivation as a means of achieving virtue[德], offering zhōng-shù(忠恕) as what is public and just(公) in order to curb the desire for gain, with the Mean(中庸) as humbleness(謙) to control the desire for fame, all while aiming for balance and stability of the entire society.
