Abstract
The change of educational paradigm along with the advancement of informational communication technology has influenced the unfolding aspects of higher education. Many universities have adopted on-line classes to enhance the quality of courses and to meet the need of learners. However, some instructors have difficulty in managing on-line classes. This study was conducted to investigate on-line classes at Seoul National University. According to different types of network utilization, learning activity, and course features, we developed a three-dimensional model for analyzing the characteristics of on-line classes The three-dimensional analysis of 240 on-line classes at SNU revealed that most of the on-line classes were rather a supporting or secondary tool, instead of replacing the face-to-face instruction. Consequently, on-line-resource-based self study was a major learning activity. In general, courses in science and engineering majors seemed to provide more on-line classes than those in social science and liberal arts. Finally, in order to facilitate on-line courses of higher education, we recommended the dynamic utilization of network, the application of learning strategies for learners participation, the vigorous interactions in on-line learning space, the immediate feedback & diverse learning strategies, the continuous monitoring, and the diverse evaluation systems.
