Abstract
The present study analyses erroneous Korean sentences appearing in ácademic writings as well as mass media writings and speeches in terms of their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties.
Syntactically, subject-predicate relations are not explicitly represented. Subjects (or objects) drop without recoverability. The distance between the subject and the predicate verb is made so long as to lose the link. Or the main sentence verb is deleted when the sentence has the [Subj [Subj X V] V] self-embedding because of the SOV order. Violation of selectional restriction is also found . The most frequent errors arise in conjunction constructions: confusion between the NP conjunction (with kwa) and the clausal conjuction (with ko), violation of the identical category principle, etc. Some mistakes involve the embedded S ending. Others are observed in
case-marking. Adverbial modifiers are erroneously associated with SinoKorean noun forms (which originally have verbal meanings). The frequent use of unnatural passive-like forms is also discussed.
Semantically, negative polarity items are wrongly associated with some lexical categories (with original negative senses). Stative and action aspect markers are confused (action markers being used for stative prenominals). The duplicate tense marker - )s)s - is used in the wrong association with the past perfect sense in English. Some errors in lexical presupposition are detected, and anaphoric relations are not clearly esta blished. Use of conditionals and subjunctives is another problematic area. Duplication in meaning is a problem. Confusion in honorific expressions and other pragmatically motivated misuses are indicated.
