Abstract
The Korean spelling system, which is in principle morphologically oriented, is not necessarily a reliable and consistent guide to the standard pronunciation of Korean. For example, it does not show the difference in vowel length which is phonologically significant, as in the pair of words /mal/ horse, /ma:l/ language. Hence the need for representing pronunciation in Korean dictionaries.
However it may be fair to say that the need for marking the pronunciation of Korean words has been neither seriously felt nor adequately met in most dictionaries published in Korea. The writer strongly feels that pronunciation should be adequately marked in all Korean dictionaries according to the following principles:
