Abstract
This study examined the realization of English reduced vowels by American English speakers in terms of orthography and stress position and also investigated its acquisition pattern by Korean L2 learners. Korean L2 learners were divided into two groups by presence or absence of the residential experience in English-speaking countries. The results of English speakers showed that English vowel reduction was sensitive to orthography and stress position in the word. Specifically English unstressed vowels in word-internal position were reduced into [ɨ] as in Flemming and Johnson (2007) or Choi (2008a), but they were realized as [ɪ] in the spelling of e in the post-stress position. Overall it was found that English unstressed vowels were more reduced when they were located in the pre-stressed position than when they were in the post-stressed position. The results of Korean L2 learners of English showed that their production of unstressed vowels was improved with the experience of residence in English-speaking countries. In addition, Korean L1 was more likely to transfer to the English unstressed vowels produced by Korean learners with no residential experience in English speaking countries.
